Nature Mirrors Life
I am constantly amazed at how I see my life in nature. I recently hiked in a National Park. It was a lovely path in the woods lined with leaves. As I crunched and walked through the woods, I couldn’t help noticing the fallen trees. Some had fallen and were leaning on other trees, some broke into pieces and lay on the forest floor, and others were hanging, split off from the main trunk and dangling in the wind. Looking over the area, seeing the broken old trees amongst the strong, tall trees, I was awed by the beauty of nature. As I gazed upon this, I was struck by the similarities in life.
I imagine my life like the forest.
Parts of my life path left me leaning on others, perhaps through illnesses. Other times, my life experiences felt like a tree falling, dropping on the forest floor, and breaking into pieces, as through my divorce. In contrast, I see the tall old trees pointing upward in silent strength. They are examples of others who strengthened me on my journey and now an example of me as I grow through my experiences and give back to others. As I take in the beauty of brokenness alongside wholeness and strength, I am reminded of our journey in life.
We will have times of breaking apart and falling away. We will have disease and death that breaks us down. We are also always growing and changing like the life cycle in the forest. Amidst the fallen trees, new trees are sprouting, reaching upward, following the sun and growing to provide protection through their leaves and branches. So too, our life experiences work together as our stories create beautiful scenery like a national forest. Our life is a thing of beauty. Broken apart into individual scenes, we see the negatives and positives that were molded
together into a beautiful landscape; one with perfection, scars, stories, lessons, and wisdom... a beautiful tapestry woven with great care.
As we travel through life, many individual items go unnoticed. In hindsight and with reflection, the intricacies fit together with purpose through pain and pleasure. Nature is a delicate balance as is our life path, ever-changing, ever-growing. I am grateful for everything that happened up to yesterday because it brought me to where I am today. Spend time in nature and ponder your own journey.
